Lucy M. Kunkel, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother died on January 24, 2018. She was born on Staten Island, New York on August 22, 1939 to William R. Mautner and Lucy T. (Murphy) Mautner.
Lucy was a very devout Catholic and family was most important to her. She graduated from Fordham University in 1967, and got her Masters Degree from Mount St. Mary College in 1994. She was always a teacher in all aspects of her life, and taught at several schools, including Minisink Valley. She was very active in scouting until her death, with both of her sons becoming Eagle Scouts with her mentoring. Along with her husband Bob, she was an avid train collector and co-owner of City Depot in New Hampton. She was an active member of her community and was elected Town of Wawayanda Assessor in the late nineties. She had an outgoing personality and was loved and respected by everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Robert, sons; William G. Kunkel and fiancée, Lori Joseph of Middletown, and Robert A. Kunkel Jr. of Wappingers Falls, daughter Suzanne Osterhoudt and husband Michael of Napanoch, and brother Richard Mautner (Marie) of Greenport, Long Island. She is also survived by her step-sons Brian and Joseph (Liz) Fitzgerald and grandchildren Xander Kunkel, Kelsey, Samantha, Stephanie, Healee, and Irelyn, as well as her sister-in laws Elaine Sahs & Gloria (Sonny) Loops and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will take place at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, New York on Sunday, January 28 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, January 29 at 11:a.m. at Holy Cross Church, South Centerville. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, 149 Cottage Street, Middletown, New York.
