Obituary for Louise G. Oles
LOUISE G. OLES

December 11, 1929 - February 14, 2011

Goshen, NY

Louise “Louisette” Oles passed away peacefully on Monday, February 14, 2011 at Glen Arden Health Care Center in Goshen, New York.

Louise was the daughter of the late Cecile and Ernest Brown and was born in Paris, France on December 11, 1929. Soon after her birth, the family moved to Fontainebleau, France. Although she had a pleasant but modest childhood, Louise lived her teenage years bearing the hardships of the Nazi occupation of France.

Louise met her late husband Preston A. Oles at a Saturday night G.I. dance, while he was stationed as a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army Ninth Armored Division near Fontainebleau. She was “swept her off her feet” and on August 3, 1946, she married Preston, her “Liberator”. After a brief honeymoon in France, Louise came to America on Columbus Day 1946 on a military troop ship with several other “war brides” destined for New York City. Her “Liberator”, who had travelled separately with the military, met her at the pier in New York. Louise was then introduced to her new mother-in-law and other members of the American family.

Louise was educated in France. She worked with her husband at Herco, Inc., a Hershey Ice Cream Distributorship in West Nyack, NY. She also worked for many years as a supervisor of accounts receivable at Phelps-Dodge Corporation, Suffern, NY and was most recently employed at the Orange County Health Department, Goshen, NY.

Louise and her husband were lifelong advocates for the intellectually challenged and developmentally disabled. Both Louise and her husband were pioneers in organizing educational meetings and support groups in their home for other families with disabled children residing at Letchworth Village, Thiells, NY. After Letchworth Village closed, Louise’s son Daniel was transferred to the care of Sullivan ARC. Louise and her husband both served on the Board of Directors of Sullivan ARC and Louise was recognized and honored with the 2007 Sullivan Arc Service Award for her dedicated efforts.

Louise enjoyed dancing, volunteering at ORMC, travelling and devoting quality time with friends and family. Louise and Preston frequently returned to France to visit with relatives, friends and to enjoy memories of their courtship in her “old” neighborhood.

Louise is survived by her son, Patrick Oles and his wife, Beverly of Westtown, NY; son, Daniel of Liberty, NY; two grandchildren, Bradford of Harris, NY and Jennifer of Boston, MA; one bother, John Brown of Middletown, NY and numerous nieces, nephews; great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. In addition, she has several dear French friends in the U.S. as well as family and friends in France. She was predeceased by a younger brother, Alfred and husband, Preston.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. on Friday, February 18 at the Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, 130 Highland Ave., Middletown, NY. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, February 19 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 149 Cottage St. Middletown, NY. Following the Mass, interment will take place in Wallkill Cemetery, Middletown, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sullivan ARC, 162 East Broadway, Monticello, NY 12701.
