Bloomingburg, NY
Loretto J. Franklin, 87, of Bloomingburg, passed away on October 30, 2014 after a brief illness.
She was born in Brooklyn on November 26, 1926, the sixth of 9 children born to Thomas H. Franklin and Catherine Halley Franklin. Raised in Hempstead, NY, she attended Bishop McDonnell High School. She graduated from St. Catherine’s Nursing School and began her career at Queens General Hospital. Her gift for compassion and healing found its expression in her career at Fort Totten caring for the families of military and at Castle Point where she cared for the veterans. Although she retired from nursing in 1981, she never stopped caring for others. She was very active in Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Bloomingburg where she was a lector, a lay Eucharistic Minister and the church historian. For many years, she was active in the prison ministry at Otisville.
Her compassion and big heart were evident by her involvement with Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties for a number of years. Loretto had a strong sense of civic duty; she was a member of the Bashakill Preserve and the Bloomingburg restoration, and she also served a term as mayor of Bloomingburg in the early 80s.
She had many interests. She loved to travel, visited many religious shrines around the world and summered in Cape May for the past 30 years with her close friend Agnes Poole. Loretto was loved by her friends and family as well as many people in her community whose hearts and lives she touched…
She is survived by her brother, Joseph P. Franklin, her sister, Kathleen Franklin, B.V.M, her close friend Agnes Poole, nieces and their families, Denise Terry and her husband Don, Nancy Franklin Prosser and her partner Mary, Mary Hannah and her husband Leon, Shira Sears and her husband David, Catherine Benson and her husband Cliff, nephews, Jeff Franklin and his wife Barbara, Tom Franklin and his wife Mary and her godchildren, Roxanne and Connor Benson and many more great-nieces and nephews.
