Beloved wife of 57 years and cherished mom of ten children, Loretto Byrne (nee Keenan) entered eternal rest on Sunday, April 2, 2017.
Loretto is survived by her husband, Manus, and her adoring children: Thomas (Patricia), Michael (Susan), Helen, Mary Wilkinson, Gabriel (Christina), Gregory (Tara), Matthew (Liz), David (Darrah), Ann (Wesley) Gaus, Elizabeth (John) Feeney. She also leaves behind 24 cherished grandchildren, and her sisters: Ettamoya (Owenie) Doonan of Co. Cavan, Kathleen Dwyer of Middletown, NY, and Philomena (Jim) Brennan of Wantagh, NY. Loretto was predeceased by her sister, Rosaleen (John) Bannon of Co. Cavan.
Born in Bawnboy, County Cavan, Ireland, Loretto immigrated to New York in the 1950s. After more than 25 years in the Bronx, where Loretto, Manus and the children were active members of St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish, they moved to Middletown, NY, where they attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Shrine. In 2005, Loretto and Manus moved back to New York City, where they joined Holy Cross Church on 42nd Street. A more recent resident of Warwick, NY, Loretto supported many charitable organizations throughout her life. She was a devoted Catholic, and a long-time member of the Bronx Pioneer Total Abstinence Association of the Sacred Heart.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4th at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Wednesday, April 5th St. Albert’s Chapel at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church , Carmelite Drive, Middletown, NY 10940.
In lieu of flowers, donations may kindly be made to the Crossroads Food Pantry at Holy Cross Church, 329 West 42nd Street, New York, New York.
