Lillian Smits of Wurtsboro NY, died on Tuesday August 31 at ORMC Horton Campus in Middletown. She was 87.

The daughter of the late Francis and Lucille Ackerman Nesbihal, she was born on November 10, 1922 in Jersey City, NJ. She attended Barbazon Business College and worked as a Nurse’s Aide at Bergen Pines in New Jersey. Lillian married Joseph Smits on December 24, 1941. Joseph predeceased her on March 20, 2004. Lillian is survived by her children, Glenn Smits and his wife Mary, and Sandra Grunlan and her husband Pastor Steve; sister Natalie Abate; and her grandchildren, Steven Grunlan, Jr and his wife Sonya, Jamie Grunlan and his wife Melissa, Rebecca Bolton and her husband Dana, Jennifer Smits, and Corrinne Smits, one great grandson Beau Bolton. Lillian will also be dearly missed by her cat, Misty.

A statement from her loving granddaughter Jennifer reads, ”I will forever miss you, but I am comforted in knowing that you have gone to join Poppy at home with the Lord”. Visitation hours are from 1 to 3 pm on Friday, September 3, 2010 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY, 10940. A Funeral Service will take place at 3 pm on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the family plot in Circleville Cemetery, Rt. 302, Circleville, NY.

Because of her lifelong love of animals, Lillian’s family requests memorial contributions in her name to be made to your local animal shelter.
