Obituary for Lillian "Penny" Smith
Lillian “Penny” Smith, a retired nurse from Horton Hospital, died suddenly on Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus. She was 75 years old.

The daughter of the late Thomas James and Lillie Bymaster Byrne, she was born on August 9, 1930 in Haddonfield, NJ. She studied nursing and graduated from Philadelphia Presbyterian Hospital.

Penny proudly served her country as a military nurse in the United States Navy. She was one of the founders of the Greenville and Lenape Ambulance Corps, she also taught first aid for the Red Cross. Penny was active in the NYS Nursing Assoc. and was a member and Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Goshen, NY.

A family statement reads: “Mom was set in her ways, but she is what we called a “tough softie”. She was always looking out for the underdog, helping others whenever she could. She went straight to the top in whatever she did. Most of all, She enjoyed her grandchildren.”

Besides her loving husband, Ted, she is survived by her five children, James of Houston, TX, Floyd and his wife Dora of Watertown, Ronald and his wife Sherry of Bellevue, NB, Karen and her husband Kenneth of Slate Hill, and Jamie of New Hampton; Eleven grandchildren, Candy, J.R., Cody, Kenneth, Brian, Valarie, Cristy, Michael, Terry, Natalie, and Thea, four greatgrandchildren and her beloved cat, Cassius Clay. Penny was predeceased by two children, Penny Lee and Teddy, Jr., one brother and one grandchild.

Family and friends are invited to call from 7 to 9 pm on Monday, March 20, 2006 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown. A funeral service of remembrance with full military honors will be celebrated at 8pm at the funeral home. Cremation will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc.

Memorial contributions in Penny’s name may be made to the Lenape or Greenville Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
