Lena Rose Schoonmaker, a lifelong resident of Middletown and New Hampton, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 with family and friends at her side. She was 97 years old.
The daughter of Firminio and Rosaria Amitrano, she was born February 9, 1927 and was one of four children. She was the wife of Robert Nelson Schoonmaker.
Lena worked at Archbald Taylor's in Middletown at a young age and worked there for many years before leaving to raise her family.
Lena was a lifelong parishioner at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Middletown. In her later years, she gave her time to visiting the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at her church. She and her sister, Emily, were faithful communicants at daily Mass.
She was a very nurturing woman who loved her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Lena is survived by her daughters Patty Ford, Marilyn Genter, Eileen Turi, her son Richard Schoonmaker, her sister-in-law, Stella Amitrano and many Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren who grieve her loss. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Robert, her daughter Rosemarie Baglia, her sisters, Mary Kerker and Emily Love and her brother, Dominick Amitrano.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday November 5, 2024 from 9:30 Am to 10:30 AM. at the Applebee–McPhilllips Funeral Home at 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown N.Y. followed immediately by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Middletown, N.Y at 11:00 am. Burial will take place in the family plot in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
