LeRoy H. Kappes, a lifetime Orange County resident, died at his son’s home in Montgomery, NY on Saturday, August 22 after a short illness. He was 77.
The son of the late Roy and Bertha Long Kappes, he was born on June 9, 1943 in Middletown.
LeRoy grew up in New Hampton and graduated from Goshen Central High School in 1961. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy as boilerman aboard the U.S.S. Lake Champlain during the Korean Conflict. After his tour of duty, LeRoy joined the Carpenters Union Local 279 and worked as a construction worker. He married the love of his life, Michele Massaro on June 21, 1964 in Middletown.
He was a car enthusiast and cared for his vehicles – everything had to shine! He and Michele belonged to the Orange County Mustang Club and enjoyed the many car shows they took part in. He loved and took great pleasure in his family, his home, and his days when he got to go fishing.
LeRoy is survived by his loving wife, Michele at home in Middletown, his devoted son, Lee Raymond Kappes and wife Tracey Ferber Kappes of Montgomery, and his grandson Jason Kenneth Kappes who helped in his care, as well as three other grandchildren; Claudia, Carly, Kyle, and two great grandchildren. He will be missed by his two dogs, Sasha and Buffy.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 from 11-11:45 am at the Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at the family plot in Wallkill Cemetery, 116 Midway Rd., Middletown, NY 10940, at Noon.
