Obituary for Laura Elisa Echevarria
Laura Elisa Echevarria, devoted mother, grandmother and independent business woman, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2021 at Garnet Health Center in Middletown. She was 87.
The daughter of the late Vincent Gonzalez and Juana Negron, she was born on January 20, 1934 in Manati, Puerto Rico. She married Antonio Echevarria in Puerto Rico in 1950 and after the birth of her first daughter, she moved to the United States. Once Laura arrived in the States, she brought all her siblings here to help take care of them after the death of her mother. Always self reliant and motivated, Laura became an Avon distributor to help support her family, In 1977, she was able to raise enough money from Avon sales to open her own grocery store in her neighborhood, E&C Groceries in Spanish Harlem, NY. In 1978, she moved to her first family home in Queens, where they lived until they moved to Bullville in 1989.
Family was the central part of Laura's life, she lovingly doted on her husband, siblings, children and grandchildren whenever possible. She enjoyed dancing, gardening and especially loved roses.
She is survived by her beloved children and their families, Antonio Echevarria, Jr, his wife Awilda and their children David, Jessica and Jennifer; Elvis Echevarria and his wife Awilda and their children Joshua, Frederick and Ashley; Evelyn Echevarria and her children Patrick and Shannon; Jane Echevarria and her children Anthony and Jayne; Nancy Echevarria and her children Robert, Oscar and Samantha and Judy Echevarria and her children Andrew and Lisa and great-grandchildren, Ivan, Yasmin, Nathan and Cameron, as well many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Antonio in 2003 and one brother, Fernando Gonzalez.
Visitation will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 am on Friday, May 14, 2021 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue. Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Friday at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, 2800 Rt. 17K, Bullville, NY 10915. Laura will be buried with her husband in O.C. Veterans Cemetery in Goshen, NY.
