Kenneth Wesley Howarth, Sr. of Chester, NY, died on Sunday, March 2,
2014 at home. He was 89 years old. The son of the late Harry Raymond
and Caroline Halpin Howarth was born 15 lbs. in Thrall Hospital (now
Thrall Park) in Middletown, NY.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine; four children: Karen Klepinger
of Fort Worth, TX; Brenda Giraldi and her husband Frank of
Westbrookville, NY; Kenneth W. Howarth, Jr and his wife Maryann of
Horseheads, NY and Russ Howarth and his wife Tammy of Goshen, NY; ten
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Under General Douglas MacArthur's command, Ken earned three battle
stars in World War II in the New Guinea, Bismark Archipelago and Luzon
Campaigns. He received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one
Bronze star and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon. He served in Port
Moresby, Tsili Tsili, Nadzab, Gusap, Lae and Hollandia, New Guinea;
Owi and Biak in the Schouten Islands; Floridablanca and Clark Field,
Philippine Islands. Ken was with the Army attached to the 871st
Airborne Engineers connected to the 5th Air Force, a special glider
outfit originating out of Wheeler Field, MA. It was purposed to cut
through the jungle to build roads and air strips and to hold back the
Japanese from progressing toward and taking Australia.
Special thanks to those children living closer, Russ and Tammy Howarth
and Brenda and Frank Giraldi. We would have been lost without the
hours allotted from Hospice and the very caring nurse, Joann Toombs and
CNA-HHA Esther Cabrera, Sister Ann and all the other independent help
and aid that was given plus extra supplies needed. Also much
appreciation to the Veterans Administration for the much needed hours
and care and any equipment offered. Thank you so much for everyone's
care and support.
He was predeceased by all five of his siblings; brothers, Ray, Bob,
Harold, and Richard Howarth and sister Mae Gentilello. Ken was a St.
Columba, Chester, NY parishioner; retiree of the Middletown
Psychiatric Center; Vice President with the CSEA and a life member of
