Obituary for Joycelyn Berneida Hylton

Joycelyn Berneida Hylton, nee Nichols (Mama), age 96, died peacefully at her home in

Middletown, New York, on March 22, 2023, embraced by her loving family.

Joycelyn was born on September 1, 1926, in Blackwoods, Clarendon, Jamaica, to Inez Rubena

Palmer (Tita) and Frank Nichols (both deceased). She graduated with a degree in pharmacy from

the College of Arts Science and Technology (CAST) and had a successful career in pharmacy at

the Kingston Public Hospital and the Spanish Town Public Hospital for over 40 years. She also

used her pharmacy skills to serve rural and underserved communities throughout the island of

Jamaica. Joycelyn was passionate about her work and known for her dedication to her patients,

love for the least and people in need, and often worked late to meet the emergency needs of

hospital patients and requests from doctors.

Joycelyn established Pioneer Pharmaceuticals on Spanish Town Road Jamaica despite

her heavy professional workload. It was not just any business, but she opened it with a vision of

serving her community and meeting the healthcare needs of West Kingston residents.

Joycelyn was a woman of deep faith and commitment to Jesus Christ and his church. It was

important for her to live out the example of Jesus not just in word, but in action. She was a lover

of Scripture; Joycelyn read widely and was a prolific writer. She corresponded with many people

scattered around the world and everywhere she went, Joycelyn eagerly shared her love of Christ

and would ask others, “Do you know Jesus?”

Joycelyn was grateful for all that God gave to her. She shared liberally to help individuals

get through school, pay rent, cover debts, purchase food, and never demanded repayment. She

shared willingly from her heart because of God’s rich blessings in her life. Most of all, she made

many sacrifices for her children and encouraged her children and most young people she met to

get an excellent education. She was a mother, mentor, advisor, and voice of wisdom to her

children and their friends.

Joycelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Vivian George Hylton. She is survived

by her five children, Anthony (wife Jerushia), Norman, Joycinth Jones (husband Jeffery),

Raynard (wife Judith), and Pamela; her stepdaughter Beverly Sutherland (5 children); also her

grandchildren, Ryan (wife Cecelia), Delano, Maisha, Isaac, Jonathan (wife Calla), Jeremy,

Judene, Raymond, Joel, Taylor Allen, and six great-grandchildren (Priscilla, Leslie, Cash, Danae, Titus

& Anyniah). She was preceded in death by sisters Ruby, and Myrtle, and brother Bernard

Palmer; and survived by her brothers and sisters, Joseph, William, Idel, Verna, Audrey, Beverly,

Delsey, and Faye Nichols with 18 nephews and 10 nieces including Orinthia Allison, Warren

Dennis, and many, many grandnieces and grandnephews. She will be deeply missed by her

family.

A funeral service will be held on March 31, 2023. A Viewing will take place at 10:00 am and the service will commence at

11:00 am at the Howells Church, 41 Church Street, Howells, NY 10932. In lieu of flowers, the

family requests that donations be made to the ministry of the Howells Church.
