Obituary for Joyce Carolyn Welsh

April 4, 1931 - February 29, 2012

Middletown, NY

Joyce Welsh passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at home, surrounded by her family. She was 80. Born April 4, 1931 to Agnes and James French in Troy, NY, she grew up in Elmhurst NY, spending summers with her family at Cossayuna Lake in upstate New York.

The most important part of Joyce’s life was her family. During nursing school, she came to Middletown for training. It was then that she met her life-long partner and love of her life, Luke Welsh. Luke and Joyce married on Feb. 5, 1955 in Elmhurst, NY and moved to Middletown, where they made their life. She had the good fortune to spend 57 years wonderful years with Luke. Over the years, they enjoyed traveling around the country and abroad – Cape Cod held a special place in their hearts. They enjoyed working for the church, taking walks and spending quiet time at home together. Along with her husband, Joyce’s daughter, son-in-law, and especially her granddaughters, were the center of her life. She was always involved in their activities – attending every event and supporting every interest. She had a wonderful way of making every occasion and holiday special.

After graduating, Joyce enjoyed a long and successful career as a nurse. She graduated from New York Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. Joyce worked as a nurse at Horton Memorial Hospital from 1955 to the early 1990’s, taking several years off to raise her daughter. Joyce loved children and spent her entire career caring for them, first in the Pediatric Ward and then in the Nursery, where she was the Manager for many years.

Joyce was active in many community groups including the Lenten Sewing Club and Garden Lovers Club of Middletown. However, she devoted most of her energies to the ministries of her church, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. She worked on nearly all committees over the years, including the Dorcas Circle, Craft Group and was a member of the Bell Choir.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Luke, at home; her daughter, Michele Duggan and son-in-law, Kevin of Middletown; her granddaughters, Jennifer of Rensselaer, NY and Christine of Queens, NY. She is also survived by her brother, Alan French and his wife, Lee and many wonderful friends and family members.

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 5, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940.
