Joseph Edward Nicks of middletown died on Friday, May 27, 2011 at O.R.M.C, Horton Campus. He was 57

Champ was born to the late Joseph E. Nicks and Flossie Nicks. He was the fourth child of eight children born to this union. He was given the nickname Champ, as he was known to his sisters,and by his mom, who thought the world of her son. Champ was doted on by his sisters who all loved this Champion of a brother. He was a great friend to many, the biggest Mets fan, and he also loved the Dallas Cowboys football team. His joy was his children and grandchildren. He was the biggest hero to his youngest son Jemel who worships his best friend, his wrestling partner, his Dad. Champ grew up in the Gowanus Housing Projects and completed his early education in Brooklyn, NY. He enjoyed playing little league baseball as a youngster. Eddie (as he was also known) was the rock of his family, he was the nicest person in the world according to his friends and family. He was easy to talk to and kept an open mind; he always tried to see the good in a N.Y. situation. He took care of those he loved, and made sure that they never went without. He will remain an inspiration to everyone, remembered for his big heart and willingness to help everyone.

He worked for the NYC Dept of Corrections on Rikers Island until his recent retirement.

In addition to his loving wife of 39 years, Yvonne at home; he is survived by their children, Joseph L. Nicks,

Lamar Dion Nicks, Jemel Edward Nicks and Shantel Flossie Nicks, all of Middletown; his beloved grandchildren, Imani, Joseph, and Khias Nicks, Ethan Maldonado Nicks , and Lilah Simone Davis-Nicks.His sisters are also left to mourn; Yvonne Nicks a.k.a Quetta of Brooklyn, Deborah Wilson and her husband John of Darlington, SC, Alice Nicks a.k.a Reah of Brooklyn, Bernadette a.k.a Winkie Davis and her husband Dean of El Paso, Tx, Tracie Nicks of Brooklyn, Cheryl Nicksof Bronx, N.Y.; his aunties Rebecca Burke and her husband Thomas of Witchita Falls, TX, Mary Truman a.k.a Blanch of Brooklyn; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, cousins and a host of friends. He was predeceased by his sister Toni Nicks in 1975.

Visitation hours will be held on Friday, June 3, 2011 from 10 am to 12 pm at First Congregational Church, 35 East Main Street, Middletown, NY 10940. The Funeral Service will be held at 12 pm at the First Congregational Church at 12 pm, burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Mulberry Street, Middletown.
