Obituary for Jorgen Jorgensen
Jorgen Jorgensen
December 16, 1928 - January 1, 2017
New Hampton, NY
On New Year’s Day of 2017, our beloved Jorgen passed into eternal peace at Orange Regional Medical center. He was 88 years old.
The son of Peter and Mitta Jorgensen, he was born on December 16, 1928 in Vejle, Denmark. Jorgen married his sweetheart and best friend, Kirsten Hjerrild, and they shared an incredible life together until her death in 1995. He never stopped missing her.
Jorgen served in the Danish military for a short time then studied auto mechanics in Denmark. He and his love, Kirsten first went to Canada and then emigrated to the U.S. where his reputation and expertise as a foreign automobile mechanic was widely recognized, and sought after. As proud as he was of his Danish heritage, he was honored to become an American citizen. He taught auto mechanics for the state of NY at the Goshen Annex until his retirement, giving all his students a valuable trade. He was a beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, (affectionately known as Morfar meaning “Mother’s Father” in Danish). Family, friends and neighbors remember that he would always go out of his way to help someone in need. He loved a good laugh, a good conversation, and the occasional debate, but always with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye.
Jorgen is survived by his only child, and loving daughter Karen Jorgensen Granzow and grandson John Granzow of New Hampton, his two sisters, Gretta Christiansen and Annie Anderson, several nieces and nephews in Denmark, and close friend Karl Granzow and his wife Kim of Middletown.
Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. of Middletown NY. www.applebee-mcphillips.com. A memorial service and celebration of life will held on Thursday January 19th at St. John's Lutheran Church, 391 Mt. Hope Road, Middletown, NY at 6pm. A brief time of reflection will be held with service to follow officiated by Pastor Peter Rustico. In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
