John W. Stephens, Jr., lifetime Howells resident and Past Chief of Howells Fire Company #1, died on June 5, 2023 at Kaplan Family Hospice Residence with his loving family at his side. He was 53.
The only son of Marion Evans Ohnegian, he was born on December 27, 1969 in Middletown, NY. John graduated from Minisink Valley High School and joined his community Fire Department when he was 16 years old. John was a dedicated member of the Howells Fire Company #1 for 37 years. On August 17, 1991, John married Tammy S. Baisley in New Vernon, NY. He was a member of Teamsters Local 445 for Tilcon Inc. and worked as a truckdriver. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting. John loved classic TV shows, especially M.A.S.H. and Emergency and was also a huge fan of both baseball and NASCAR, a Jeff Gordon fan. Most of all, he loved his family and was a protective Dad to his three girls.
In addition to his loving wife Tammy at home, John is survived by his three daughters, Jennifer Vogt and her husband Robert of Minneapolis, MN, Danielle Cavender and her husband Anthony of Howells, NY and Megan Stephens and her fiancé Frankie Yovino of Gainesville, TX; four grandchildren, Abigail, Corey John, Kayden, and Bria; and his sister, Lisa Hotelan. His In-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Baisely,Sr, brother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Baisely, Jr; sister-in-law, Peggy Fontana and her husband Paul; aunt Diane Elliott, cousin Donald Elliott and family; along with many more cousins, nieces and nephews; and his cats: Jaxon and Clutch, all survive John.
John was predeceased by his grandparents, Everett and Lenora Evans, uncles Everett Evans Jr, Martin Evans and great uncle Donald Elliott.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 pm on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Funeral & Firematic Service will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, June 9, 2023 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Howells Cemetery.
