John P. Rivera, a hardworking and dedicated lifetime area resident, died on Friday, July 6 at his home in Bloomingburg. He was 53.
The son of Eleanor Howard and the late William Howard, he was born on October 1, 1964 in the Bronx. John proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1983-89. He worked for the O.C. Sheriff’s Dept., and The Town of Mt. Hope Police Dept. He received a lifesaving medal during his career at Mt. Hope for rescuing an accident victim. For the past 30 years, John worked as a supervisor for Orange and Rockland Utilities. He enjoyed sports and played baseball and football in high school. John was a die hard fan of the NY Yankees and Giants sports teams as well as Notre Dame. He was crafty and a John Deere fanatic.
John was the life of the party and will surely be missed by those who knew him. He was outgoing with a great sense of humor and he knew everyone. He was active in many groups and organizations, especially the Elks B.P.O.E. 1097, where he served as an Exalted Ruler.
John is survived by his wife Susan; his son Nicholas and his wife Michelle of Mooresville, NC and Kelcie Rivera at home, one sister Donna Iorio and her signifiy friends.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 am on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avennue, Middletown, NY 10940. An Elks Service will be held at 11 am Saturday, followed by a Celebration of Life and Military honors at the funeral home. Cremation will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc.
