Obituary for John O'Connor
John O'Connor, a lifelong area resident, passed away Friday, December 22, 2006 at Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh. He was 84 years old.The son of the late Richard and Harriet Viola Staley O'Connor, he was born on August 24, 1922 in Middletown.A Dairy Farmer from Slate Hill, John was also very active in the community. He was Town Justice of the Town of Wawayanda from 1970-present; past Councilman of the Town of Wawayanda Town Board; Charter Member and past President of the Minisink Valley Kiwanis Club; member and past President of the Orange County Magistrate's Association; past member of Minisink Valley Central School District Board of Education; Charter Member of the Wawayanda Volunteer Fire Company; past Director of the Farm Credit Bureau, as well as a member of the Beaverbrook Hunting and Fishing Club, Inc.A Family Statement reads: "We would like John to be remembered for his love of family, his commitment to community service, and his fortitude and perseverance in times of difficulty."John is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Ruth Sutherland O'Connor at home; his daughter, Candice O'Connor of Slate Hill; his sons, Tim O'Connor and his wife, Monica of New Hampton and Shawn R. O'Connor, Esq. and his wife, Kathryn (Trinka) of Slate Hill; his grandchildren, John, Andrew, Matthew, and Emily; his sister, Jeanette Gallup of Fishkill.John was predeceased by his brother, Richard O'Connor; and his sister, Catherine Finnegan.Family and friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, December 27, at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 28, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, South Centerville.Cremation will be private and at the convenience of the family.John's family respectfully requests memorial donations in John's name be made to either: John O'Connor Memorial Scholarship, c/o Minisink Valley Central School District, Route 6, Slate Hill, NY 10973 or to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc., 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.Arrangements are under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc.
