John J. Burns passed away on Friday, August 2, aged 83 years, at Garnet Health Medical Center in
Middletown, NY.
John was born September 5, 1940 in New York City to Charles and Marie (DePalma) Burns. John
was a decorated New York City Fireman (retired) and most recently drove sports team and class trip
school buses for several area high schools including S.S. Seward, Chester, and Burke Catholic H.S.
John was married for 46 years to Marlene (Wentz) Burns who predeceased him on November 3,
2008. John was an avid card player, who enjoyed sports, his grandchildren, and good food with
friends and family.
John is survived by his children, John and Elizabeth of Virginia, Thomas of Tennessee, Christopher of
New York, William and Meredith of Pennsylvania, Karen and Keith Downing of New York, and eleven
grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors Thursday, August 8, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Applebee McPhillips
Funeral Home in Middletown, NY. The funeral service will be held at Holy Cross Church in South
Centerville, NY on Friday, August 9, at 11am. Interment will be held at St. Stanislaus Catholic
Cemetery in Pine Island, NY following the funeral service.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
