John Herbie Waterman
John Herbie Waterman, a longtime area resident, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday April 27 surrounded by his family.
The son of Howard and Myrtle Hulse Waterman he was born on July 23, 1934 in Kingston, NY.
He attended Goshen Schools as well as Seventh Day Adventist School in Middletown. He later proudly served in the U.S. Army. John married Joyce B. Read on February 20, 1960 in Middletown. He retired from Ford Motor Corporation and also worked for Chester Cable and Pillar, Inc.
Herb was a loving husband and father. He was an avid runner and was an active member of the Orange Runners Club and the Sullivan Striders Club. An accomplished athlete, Herbie competed many races and 28 marathons; including the Orange Classic, the Rock Hill Races ( Celebration for Life), the New York Marathon, the Mohonk Marathon and the marathons in Steamtown, Pennsylvania and six 100 KM Catskill Mountain Road Relays.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce at home; his son, Robert; daughters, Cheryl Miller and her husband Scott of Louisianna and Merilee Waterman of Middletown; brothers, Alfred and his wife Shirley and Larry Waterman all of Middletown; many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by Harriet Culver in 1987, Margaret Weed in 1994. and Herbert “Sonny” Waterman in 2009.
Visitation hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Funeral Service of Remembrance will be held at 11 am on Friday, April 30, 2010 at the funeral home. Burial with Military honors will follow in the family plot in Wallkill Cemetery, Midway Road, Middletown.
