Obituary for John Francis Mullarkey, Sr.
John Francis Mullarkey, an area resident since 1970, died with his loving family at his bedside on December 10, 2019 at Orange Regional Medical Center. He was 83.
The son of the late Beatrice Ruane and John F. Mullarkey, Sr., he was born on June 28, 1936 in New York City, NY. John enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating from High School and served his country until 1962. On September 9, 1967, he married Gloria Bednarski in Garden City, NY. Shortly after their marriage, Gloria and John moved Upstate where John worked for many years driving a gasoline tanker for Mobil Oil out of the Newburgh, NY terminal.
John was extremely proud to have been a Marine, but was most proud of his son, John Scott. Although striken with a catastrophic illness in the prime of his life, he bore it with dignity, a positive attitude, and always with a smile on his face. It was his smile that endeared him to his family, friends and strangers alike.
In addition to his loving wife Gloria at home, he is survived by his son, John Scott Mullarkey; one brother, Jim Mullarkey of City Island, NY; sister Geraldine Foy and her husband George of Suffern, N.Y. and his granddaughter, Alexandra Turpin.
Visitation will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 13, 2019 at St. Albert's Chapel at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Carmelite Drive, Middletown, NY 10940. Burial with Military honors will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday in Orange County Veterans Cemetery in Goshen, NY.
