John F. Hoffer, age 88, of NYC and formerly of Shelburne Falls, died Saturday, Occtober 12, 2013 at his daughter’s residence in Otisville of mesothelioma. John was born March 31, 1925 in Frankfurt, Connecticut. He is the son of the late Otto and Emma Hoffer, former owners of the Frankfurt Steam Laundry and he grew up during the Great Depression.

John was a captain in the United States Air Force, serving during World War II. He was a graduate of Wesleyan University and an artist who worked in many different mediums; sculpting rock, carving illustrations into wood and hand printing books, making etchings, painting scenes with oil paints and composing music. Before he died, he was working on compiling a collection of etchings into a hand bound book called “ The Lost Island Series”, based on his experiences in the Pacific during the war. He supported his love of art through working as a maintenance man and night watchman at The Art Students league of New York. He began work there in 1963 and worked up to December 2012 of last year. He was dedicated to his job and his family. He enjoyed going on trips with his daughter and her family and was a kind, soft-spoken, generous man. He will be sadly missed and forever in our hearts-May you rest in peace.

John is survived by his two cats, Tiger and Blindy, His daughter and son-in-law Heideli and Henry the barbara of Otisvile and two grandchildren, Samantha Lilly and Emma and family and friends: Chris, Pat, Woody, Neil, Myron, and Dimitri.

Visitation hours are 7-9, Thursday, October 17, at Applebee-McPhillips Funerual Home, Inc. 130 Highland Ave. Middletown, NY 10940. Services will be at rhe funeral home 11 AM, Friday, October 18, 2013 with Pastor Steve Offringa, officiating. Burial with Military Honors to follow in the Orange County Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
