John A. Stefane, a longtime Middletown resident, died following a long illness on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Glen Arden Health Care Center in Goshen. He was 89.
The son of the late John and Agnes Survilla Stefane, he was born on December 8, 1924 in Elmont, NY. John enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. at the age of 17 to serve his country during World War II. He later served his community for over 50 years as a volunteer Fireman for the Elmont Fire Dept.
John valued service and personal responsibility and was extremely proud of being a Marine. He dearly loved his children and his grandchildren. His time with them was one of the best parts of his life. As it is said, "to live in the hearts of those we leave behind is not to die", he will live forever in our hearts.
John is survived by his loving wife, Arlene at home; one son, Randy Stefane and his wife, Fonda and their sons: Randy and Brian of Massapequa Park, NY; daughters: Tara Vollano and companion, John Nowinski, and her sons: Nicholas and Jonathan of Port Jervis; and Rebecca Frank of Bear, DE and her husband, Josh and their children: Caleigh, Reese and Cadel;grandson John Stefane and his wife, Lynne and their children, Ryan and Laura, and one sister, Lorraine Morello and her husband, James of Punta Gorda, FL.
He was predeceased by two sons: John A. (Jack) Stefane and his wife, Joan and Lawrence (Larry) Stefane and one grandson, James Stefane.
Visitation hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 5th at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Ave., Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 6th at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 90 Euclid Ave., Middletown. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Orange County Veterans Cemetery, 111 Craigville Rd., Goshen, NY 10924.
