Joan K. Surita, a longtime Middletown resident, died following a long illness on Wednesday September 2 at her home. She was 72.
The daughter of the late Frank and Erna Zoller Lakner, she was born on December 7, 1936 in the Bronx. Joan worked as a bookkeeper for Hodge and Hammen Construction in the Bronx. A resident of the area since 1962, she was a member of the Warwick Republican party, a co-founder and volunteer for Orange County A.H.R.C. and the Mental Health Dept in Goshen. She was also instrumental in the establishment of the Warwick Animal Shelter. She contributed her time and efforts to many charitable organizations during her lifetime. She was an orginal panel member of the community services expansion plan (C-SEP) which evolved into what is now known as ( SNAP) services needs access panel fo Orange County. Joan was also an active member of the consumer council and represented Orange County at the New York State Cares Committee to provide housing for hte developmentally disabled. Joan was a beloved daughter, caring wife, dedicated mother, loyal grandmother and terrific friend. She will be greatly missed by all.
Joan is survived by her husband, Rafael at home; her daughters, Laura of Middletown and Jennifer of Washingtonville; and two grandchildren, Michael and Amber of Middletown.
Visitation hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Friday, September 4, 2009 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 am on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at St. Joseph's Church, 113 Cottage Street, Middletown. Burial will follow in the family plot in Wallkill Cemetery, Midway Road, Middletown.
