Janina “Nina” Kelly, a resident of both Westbrookville, NY and New Port Richey, FL, died on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at Orange Regional Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was 67.
The daughter of Stella Olesiuk Carter and the late Lawrence Carter, she was born on Christmas day in 1946 in the Bronx, NY. On May 21, 1966, Nina married Thomas Kelly, who was the love of her life and best friend for 53 years. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Wurtsboro, NY, where she was also a member of the Ave Maria Guild. She retired from Town of Warwick DPW and stayed active in the Town of Warwick on a part time basis until just one year ago. She was a volunteer parent of the Queens Drum and Bugle Corps in Warwick and volunteered for Girl Scouts, for school functions and did crafts in Nursing Homes. Nina’s favorite saying was “Money is only paper”, and she gave freely and generously to charities, especially St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
Family was everything for Nina, and her grandchildren were the loves of her life. She enjoyed her time at the beach and going shopping. She was an extremely outgoing and fun loving woman who loved to travel and adventure.
In addition to her loving husband Tom, she is survived by her three daughters, Tammie Fredell and her husband Joseph and Tricia Bennett and her husband Timothy all of Wurtsboro, and Tina Umhey and her husband James of Granger, IN; three sisters, Francene McCarthy of Ontario, NY, Laurie Miller and her husband Patrick and Lisa Gorton all of Trumansburg; and ten cherished grandchildren, Brandon, Kelly, Cassie, Kyle, Kerissa, Jordan, Brianna, Kara, Andrew and Clare; two greatgrandchildren, Jasper and Jacob and four step great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jill, Jordan, and Adam and several nieces, nephews, greatnieces and greatnephews.
Visitation hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm on Sunday, October 5, 2014 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue,Middletown, Ny 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Monday, October 6, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Wurtsboro, Fr. Peter Madori will officate.
Memorial contributions in Nina’s name may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Pl, Memphis, TN 38105.
