Jane E. McPike died at Garnet Medical Center on Friday, November 18, 2022, after an extended battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 80 years old.
Born on January 12, 1942 to Martha (Allan) and James McPike in the Bronx, N.Y. She was raised in the Bronx (Parkchester) and attended Catholic Schools in the Bronx and was a graduate of Cathedral High School in Manhattan, N.Y. She was a graduate of City College of New York and received her Master's Degree from CCNY.
Jane spent her life teaching, coaching, and helping people whenever she could. She was a retired teacher from the Archdioceses of New York. She taught and coached at the elementary schools, St. Gabriel's, St. Anthony's and Holy Rosary. She also taught math and then was the Assistant Principal of curriculum at St. Catherine Academy High School. After she moved upstate with the Welch's she taught at St. Joseph's in Florida, N.Y. and John S. Burke High School in Goshen, N.Y. until she retired in 2006.
Jane spent her summers working at Camp Marydell in Nyack, N.Y. She spent her 25 summers at Marydell as a counselor, head counselor, and aquatic director. Her former campers still say the can hear her whistle blowing. She spent her later life going back to Marydell to volunteer with her friends to help restore different parts of the camp for the Sisters of Christian Doctrine.
One of her favorite things in the world was flowers, she spent the spring time picking out the best ones with which to decorate her home with. In her retirement she volunteered at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, she spent her time there tutoring students, helping with school events, assisting the principal with different tasks, and every Thursday helping organize folders for the students to take home. At church she was a Eucharistic Minister and occasionally a lector. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and celebrating holidays, weddings and birthdays. Jane loved to decorate her home for each and every holiday and spending her time reading Nora Roberts books and watching old time western shows and Hallmark movies.
Jane is survived by her sister, Ellyn M. Kelly, her niece Michael-Ann Cerniglia (David) and their children Emerson and Auden, her nephew Ryan Kelly and his children Addison and Callan, Barbara Kunar (Thomas's Life Partner), her best friend Dorothy (Falk) Welch (Richard) and her nieces Diana and Emily Welch. Jane also was an unofficial member of the Falk Family. Jane is predeceased by her parents (Martha and James), her brother, Thomas, her brother-in-law Robert P. Kelly and many close friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 28, 2022 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home in Middletown from 6:00-8:00p.m. The Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at 10:00a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Middletown, N.Y. with Rev. Paul Denault O.Carm as the presider.
