Obituary for James Patrick Holland

James Patrick Holland

February 15, 1942 – January 21, 2024

Middletown, NY

With great sadness the family of James P. Holland announces his unexpected passing on January

21, 2024, at The Valley View Rehabilitation Center in Goshen, NY.

James, a long-time Middletown resident, was born on February 15, 1942, in Queens, NY, as the third of four children to John and Nellie Holland.

James was a graduate of Holy Cross High School, Flushing, NY, and Stonehill College in North

Easton, MA.

In his younger years, James was a Holy Cross Brother who worked as a teacher in

Kampala, Uganda. Upon his return to the States, James continued to serve the youth, both as a Holy

Cross Brother and then later as a lay person, in many positions within the fields of mental health and

social services. Throughout his career, James also worked as a healthcare administrator, and in his

retirement, he dabbled in real estate.

James married Alice Darcy in 1973 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Middletown. James and Alice were married for 50 years and have one child and four grandchildren.

James was a passionate golfer and was active for many years as a board member of Hospice as well as a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. As a member of the AOH, he was very proud to have been selected as an Aide to the Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City.

Later in life, James battled a progressive neurological disease that profoundly impacted his mobility and independence. Despite the debilitating pain and toll this disease took on his body, he never gave up hope and courageously faced each new day and its challenges until the moment of his sudden death.

James was an active member of Mount Carmel Church. While he was able, he served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist to the homebound and in later years developed a great devotion to the brown scapular and the rosary.

James is survived by his devoted wife, Alice; their daughter, Deirdre Walsh; son-in-law, Patrick; and

grandchildren: Ciaran, Aidan, Declan, and Fiona Walsh. He is also survived by his sister, Mary

Facella, and her children: Caroline, Kristin, and Stephen; sister-in-law Patricia Darcy; and sister-in-

law Kathleen Darcy and her children: Paul, Michael, and Joseph. James was predeceased by his

parents John and Nellie; his brothers John and Denis; sister-in-law Judith Holland; brother-in-law

Thomas Darcy; nieces Meredith Facella and Kathleen Holland; and nephew Dennis Holland.
