James Merritt, a lifetime Middletown resident, passed in the comfort of his daughter's home on February 5, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was 82.
James was born on February 21, 1939 in Middletown, NY to the late Leslie and Elizabeth Brennan Merritt. He attended Middletown Schools and world as a dairy manager for A& P for 45 years. James was an avid sportsman and was an accomplished tennis, basketball, 300 bowler, and hole in one golfer. He was a coach at St. Albert's Seminary in Middletown from 1967-71.
James is survived by his son, James Merritt, Jr. and his wife Dana, daughters, Judy Merritt and Gwen DiLillo and Jill Merritt; sister Jean Guevara and the mother of his children, Gay Merritt; eight grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held from 6 to 8 pm on Wednesday February 9, 2022 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Ave, Middletown, NY 10940. Cremation was private. Arrangements are under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. www.applebee-mcphillips.com
