Obituary for James "J.R." Reilly
James Reilly (AKA JR) passed away on 2/20 - surrounded by his loving family - after a courageous 2 year battle with Merkel Cell Carcinoma.
He is survived by his wife Margo, daughters Khristina (Joel) and Erin (Sam) - Grandchildren CJ, Raechel and Jake, great grandchildren Anthony, Brandon, and Adriana - Sisters Eileen (Frank) and Sharon (Tommy) & brother Danny (Jen) - Predeceased by his brothers Gene, Larry and Paul - Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was born on S.I. to Eugene and Audrey Reilly. He was a proud FDNY Firefighter on Ladder 28 (The Harlem Hilton), and was later promoted to Fire Marshall. After retirement from the FDNY, he became a practicing RN.
Helping people was always a part of his life, and although retired on 9/11 he volunteered at the WTC site to assist in rescue attempts.
He was an active part of his community. He was a member of the Silver Lake volunteer Fire Department and the Elks. He coached both boys baseball, girls softball, girls basketball and never missed a game to cheer his family on. He was an avid sports fan of the Mets, Giants and Rangers.
In addition to spending time with family, he loved being at his Myrtle Beach condo, golfing with friends and fishing and crabbing with his grandsons. He also enjoyed passing down his cooking recipes to his granddaughter, especially his recipe for his firehouse mashed potatoes.
Visitation hours are from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm on Friday, February 23, 2024 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Celebration of J.R.’s Life will be held at 7:30 pm at the funeral home. Cremation will be private.
