Obituary for James H. Benton
James H. Benton
New Hampton, NY
James H. Benton, a longtime area resident, died Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at home with his loving family by his side. He was 59 years old.
The son of the late Herman H. and Ruth Edwards Benton, James was born October 23, 1947 in Livingston Manor, NY. Jim was a custom woodworker and the founder of Independence Woodcrafters, which later became the Old Mill Woodworking Ltd. in Johnson, NY. He was the past president and caretaker of Shawangunk Fish and Game Association.
A family statement reads, “Jim and Olga were married on Christmas Eve in 1968 in Livingston Manor where he grew up with a love of others and an appreciation of nature. He was a person who thrived on working; using his mechanical skills and problem solving abilities to be known to all as a ‘jack of all trades’. He was generous with his time and talents, coaching little league, and teaching adult woodworking classes. Jim leaves us with many wood creations and a lifetime of memories we’ll cherish forever.”
He is survived by his beloved wife, Olga, at home; his two sons James, at home, and Steven and his expectant wife Jesica, of Henderson, Nevada; his four sisters Delores Brzytwa of Roscoe, Leona Robinson of Livingston Manor, Marie Watson and her husband, Tom, of Livingston Manor, and Dawn Decker and her husband Frank, of White Sulphur Springs; his uncle Wallace Benton and his wife, Mary; his aunt Nancy Lou Tompkins; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Besides his parents, James is predeceased by his two sisters Shirley Benton and Ann Hubbell.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 21 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8 pm at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown. A Funeral Service of Remembrance will take place at 8 pm at the funeral home with Reverend Robert Hoag officiating. Cremation will be private and at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers donations in Jim’s name may be made to St. Vincent’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, Multiple Myeloma Program C/o Karen Plummer, 325 West 15th Street, New York, New York 10011. Arrangements under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc.
