Obituary for James Francis Phelan

James “Jim” Francis Phelan of Middletown, New York passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at the age of 90. Jim was a family man, veteran, and diehard Yankee fan.

Jim was born in New York on March 27, 1933, to James Francis Phelan and Lucille May Phelan. The youngest of three children, he served in the Korean War as a cryptologist for the Air Force and was stationed in northern Japan.

At the end of the war, Jim returned to New York and in 1959 began a 40-year career with The Federal Reserve Bank of New York, before enthusiastically retiring in 1999. During this period, in 1958, he met his future wife Mary Ellen Mooney, and they were married on June 27, 1959, a marriage that lasted nearly 64 years, only interrupted by his passing.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister Lucille Fischer. He is survived by his wife Mary and sister Janet Donohue; five children: Paul & wife Josephine, James & wife Eileen, Michael & wife Lisa, Richard & wife Susan, and Thomas & wife Carrie; thirteen grandchildren: James, Jack, Christine, Ryan, Brian, Joseph, Garrett, Kaitlyn, Peter, Liam, Cormac, Jake, and Charlie.

A private visitation for Jim is planned for Monday, June 5, 2023,  The private family visitation and subsequent service officiated by a priest from St. Joseph’s church will be held at the Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Middletown, New York.

The above will be followed by burial services at Jim’s final resting place at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York, where he will be buried in the family plot.
