Obituary for Irene Carmody DeStefano
Irene DeStefano, of Goshen, NY, a lifelong area resident, entered into rest on Wednesday,
March 28th at Orange Regional Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was 92
years old. The daughter of the late Ambrose Carmody and Catherine (McPhillips) Carmody,
Irene was born on June 25th, l925 in Montgomery, NY.
She met and fell in love with her husband, Michael, while both were working for the County Of
Orange. Irene was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother who still, at 92, gave endless
amounts of love and advice to her family. She was, truly, a classy lady.
Irene was very proud of her Irish heritage. She decided to open an Irish Tea & Gift Shop
which she named “ The House of Leprechauns”, and enjoyed immensely. Later in life, she
owned and operated, Orange Paper Placers, Inc,. with her daughter, Kathleen, until she retired
in 1982.
Mom was an avid gardener, terrific cook and an awesome Rummy card player, who somehow
managed to beat any and all of her opponents, but most of all, she was the best mother anyone
could wish for. She was always there for us, no matter what.
She was predeceased by her husband, Michael, with whom she shared 53 years of marriage.
Irene is survived by her son, Richard DeStefano and his wife Annie of Montgomery, NY and her
daughter, Kathleen Gould and her husband John of Goshen, NY ; and her two cherished
grandsons, Michael Gould and Matthew DeStefano; as well as many beloved cousins, nieces,
nephews, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, friends and her precious dog Emme.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, April 2nd at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral
Home, Inc. 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 3rd at The Church Of St. John The Evangelist, Murray
Avenue, Goshen, NY. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor, NY.
Memorial contributions may be made in Irene’s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or The
Shriners Hospitals for Children, both of which, were dear to her heart.
