Our family is sad to announce the unexpected death of our Mother and Grandmother, Ilona Schwartz-Dallow, who died at Garnet Medical Center on March 23, 2023 with her family at her side. She was 76.
The daughter of Albert and Edith Schwartz, Ilona was born on September 5, 1946. She was a resident of the Middletown area except for the years she spent in the state of Florida working as a Clinical social worker.
Ilona married at 16 and had two children who meant the world to her. Ilona encouraged them to pursue educational opportunities, appreciate options for living somewhere other than where they were born, and be all that they could be. She was determined and driven and, after raising her family, returned to school, completing several different courses of study. With her degrees, she worked as a Dental Hygienist, a Real Estate Broker, NYS Legislative Aide, a Licensed Certified Social Worker and Therapist, all while encouraging her friends and acquaintances to explore options and be fearless when attempting something new. She led by example and made a difference in many lives.
Ilona is survived by her children, William Youngman and his fiancée Deana Brennan of Goshen, and Wendy Lofrese and her husband James of New Hampton, and her four precious grandchildren; Madison and Brooke Youngman, and Connor and Abigail Lofrese, as well as her brother, Albert.
Ilona was predeceased by her beloved daughter-in-law, Margo Claster, and her two brothers, John and Robert Schwartz.
When we hear Frank Sinatra’s “My Way, “ we turn up the volume, listen to the lyrics, and think of Ilona. She was an independent, adventurous and a principled woman who lived her life to the fullest, had few regrets, and did it “her way.”
A gathering of friends and family will be held on Saturday. April 1, 2023 from 2-4 pm at the Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. 130 Highland Ave. Middletown, N.Y.
Donations in Ilona’s name may be made to her favorite charity, Margo’s Dream, which provides scholarships for local students interested in the arts and which donates to local charities. Donations can can be made via Venmo @margos_dream or check to Margo’s Dream 2 Clarke Rd., Goshen, N.Y. 10924.
