Herbert Goro

Iconic Photojournalist Herbert Goro died at Valley View Nursing Home in Goshen, New York on February 3, 2020. He was 81 years old.
He is survived by his wife of almost 30 years, Dr. Cassilda James, his daughter Berit Goro and darling granddaughter Siran Goro.
Herb attended High School in the Bronx, after which he attended City College of New York . While a student there, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served three years Active Duty. He taught Photojournalism at Queen’s College of New York; Cooper Union, New York; Washington University, D.C.and lectured at Harvard and New York University, just to name a few.
He was a Photojournalist all his life, and some of his best work was published in New York Magazine, and other publications both at home and abroad. Among his best works are: “The Old Man In The Bronx”, “The Block” ( A book about the Regentrification of the East Bronx), “Blind People and Their Children”, Women and Their Pets” and “Youth in America” series, which appeared in Seventeen Magazine.
He received various awards: Best Non-Fiction ( New York Magazine), Best Book Award from Columbia School of Journalism, Best Book Award-Young Adults-American Library Association Blue Ribbon Award; and dozens of other awards from local and regional markets.
Herb loved people and family and always tried to make life easier and better for everyone he encountered.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc.,130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, New York from 11:30 A.M. to 12:30P.M. A Service of Remembrance will be celebrated at 12:30, followed by burial in the family plot at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, 149 Cottage Street, Middletown, New York.
