Helen Roche Swanwick, a retired nursing instructor for SUNY Orange, died following a long illness on Monday, May 8, 2017 at Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh, NY. She was 85.
The daughter of the late Maurice and Helen Grossinger Roche, she was born on November 9, 1931 in Queens, New York. Helen married Robert Swanwick in Springfield Gardens in Queens in 1955, and they moved to the Middletown area in 1958. Helen was trained as a diploma nurse at St. Vincent’s nursing School and became an instructor with Orange County Community College. In her time at the college, Helen touched many lives and was active in the community around her. She brought her passion to everything she was involved in. Helen worked along side her husband, Bob, assisting the mentally ill though their lifelong advocacy and education. Her concern for the needs of the community also inspired her to become a founding member of Hospice of Orange County. She was a spiritual woman who enjoyed attending Masses at St. Albert’s Chapel, and before her illness, she was very active at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. She was peaceful, accepting and generous and was a welcoming “friend” to many, and she was admired over the years by co-workers, students, patients, family and friends. Helen found joy in many places, but especially loved her five grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Thomas of Middletown, Susan Daily and her husband Michael of Lake Wyley, SC, and Michael and his Elisabeth of Nanuet. NY; sister, Marilyn Koglmeier and her husband Ernest of Cassanovia, NY, and a sister-in-law Carol Swanwich of Goshen; five grandchildren, Mariah, Rebekah, Leah, Naomi, and Chrisitan, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Robert and brother, Fr. Maurice Roche, and brother-in-laws Francis G. and William H. Swanwick and sisters-in-law Helen and Mary Swanwick.
