Obituary for Helen C. Valik
Helen C. Valik
March 29,1926 – November 21, 2021
Helen Valik of Summitville, New York died on November 21,2021 at her home after a short illness. She was ninety-five. Surrounded by her two loving caregivers, Anna “Cookie” Nozkowski, Vanesa Sarabia Gonzalez and her “knight in shining armor” as she referred to him- Alfred Schwab. She is at peace.
Helen was born in the borough of Manhattan, New York City to Charles and Carolina Bencik Bavslik on March 29,1926. She graduated high school and became a wartime bride to Joseph Valik in 1942. Anxiously awaiting his return from war, she pursued her passion for crocheting- evident by the many lovely items she made. A devout Catholic, all her prayers were answered when her husband Joe returned safely home.
Together, they rejoiced in the birth of their son, John, born January 5, 1947.
After moving from Manhattan to Summitvile, she enjoyed making a loving home for her family and the many stray cats that passed by- no cat left hungry! Helen joined St. Joseph’s Church in Middletown, worshipping many Sunday masses throughout her life.
Helen is survived by her nieces; Paula, Caroline, Carol, Ilona, Janie, and Annemarie, one nephew Otto and many grand nieces and nephews, as well as a close family friend Keith White, who always called her Aunt Helen and kept her yard well cared for.
She is pre-deceased by both parents, her husband Joseph and her loving son John, four brothers: Joe, Charlie, John and Eddie and their wives, one sister Pauline and her husband, a sister-in-law Olga Valik Hlavac, and her husband as well.
Memorial contributions, in Helen’s name, may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
