Hattie-Belle R. Truex, a lifetime resident of the area and retired Registered Nurse, went home to be with her Lord on September 24, 2021 after a brief illness at Garnet Health Medical Center. She was 99 years young.
The family matriarch, she was born on April 27, 1922 in Middletown, NY to the late Harland and Ida Babcock Caffery. She graduated from Middletown High School and St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Newburgh, NY. She worked on maternity at the Horton Memorial Hospital; did private duty at the Middletown Sanitarium; and retired as Head Nurse from the Middletown Psychiatric Center. She was awarded a Certificate of Merit from the State of New York Civil Service Commission for her idea for the improvement of patient charts.
She married the love of her life Robert S. Truex (with whom she had been with since she was 15) on September 3, 1944. They were blessed to have over 71 years of marriage until his death on November 4, 2015. They spent over 16 years wintering in Pinellas Park, FL, and she became the Go To person decorating their community hall. She was honored to receive the plaque of recognition from the park for all of her contributions.
She was a devout Christian and a member of Mt. Carmel Church. She belonged to the Independent Order of Reindeer, Confraternity of Our Lady of the Brown Scapular, St. Luke’s Hospital Alumni, R.N. Club, AARP, PEF and lifetime member of RPEA. She enjoyed cooking, Arts and Crafts, and NASCAR. Her family was the most important part of her life. At Christmas time she would bake hundreds of cookies to give to her family and friends.
She is survived by her son, Robert (Skip) Truex and his wife, Barbara; Grandchildren, Scott Truex and Janet Deverso and her husband, Jason; great-grandchildren, Colin, Brendon, and Jocelyn Truex, and Savannah, Devin, and Sophia Deverso, and sister-in-law, H. Jean Truex, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her sister, Elizabeth Skinner; and her brother, Wesley Caffery.
Friends may visit from 4-7 pm on Thursday, September 30th, at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., A Service of Remembrance will take place at 1pm on Friday, October 1st at the Funeral Home, with Burial to follow at Wallkill Cemetery, Middletown, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, Processing Center, P.O. Box 863785, Orlando FL, 32886, in Hattie-Belle’s name.
