Harry Gibson Schaffer, a longtime resident of Johnson and former resident of Candor, died Friday, June 23, 2011 at ORMC Arden Hill Campus. He was 93.

The son of the late Evan L. and Anna Harvey Schaffer , he was born on May 31, 1918 in Conshohocken, PA.

He married the love of his life, Arline E. Schoonmaker, on October 17, 1941 in Warwick . Harry worked for Ford, Weld and Cox Feed Store in Johnson, NY and was a talented woodworker. He served was a dedicated member and served as an Elder at his church, Grace United Methodist Church in Ridgebury. He also served as Assistant Chief for two years, Fire Chief for 18 years and was a lifetime member of Rutgers Engine Company in Johnson, NY.

Harry was a warm, giving and gentle man, truly one of a kind. He was loved by all and his generosity towards others was limitless. He was always there for anyone who needed him and never asked for anything in return.

He is survived by his loving wife Arline at home, two sons Allen and his wife Dawn of Westtown, Edward and his wife Peggy of Florida, NY, his sister Eleanor Fitzgerald of Sunberry, PA , six grandchildren Wendy, Brian, Allen, Paul, Daniel and Jill, he is also survived by many great grandchildren.

Harry was predeceased by his son Richard in 2006 and five brothers. Visitation hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Monday, June 27, 2011 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. 130 Highland Ave. Middletown, NY 10940. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, June 28 at 11 am at the funeral home, Rev. Kevin Mulqueen from Grace United Methodist Church of Ridgebury. Burial will follow in the family plot in Wallkill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Harry’s name may be made to either Grace United Methodist Church of Ridgebury, 684 Ridgebury Road, Slate Hill, NY 10973 or to Rutgers Engine Co, P.O. Box 85, Johnson, NY 10933.
