HARRY A. YORK

February 25, 1946 - September 30, 2013

Middletown, NY

Harry A. York, 67, a longtime resident of Middletown, NY, died suddenly at home on September 30, 2013. The son of the late Harry W. York and Adella Gregory, he was born on February 25, 1946, in Liberty, NY.

Harry's life will be remembered for his many years of public service. Enlisting in the Air Force in 1965, he served in Vietnam as well as numerous assignments in Europe, the Far East, and the US. After 12 years of active duty, he moved his young family to Middletown, NY, where he began his career as a letter carrier at the Middletown Post Office, serving his customers until retiring in 2004. During this time, he enlisted in the Air National Guard at Stewart Airport and served an additional 12 years, retiring in 1997 with the rank of Tech Sergeant while receiving the Meritorious Service Medal for his service to his country. After a 1-week vacation, he started his next career as a dispatcher with the Middletown Police Department, where he was employed until his death, taking great pride in assisting the officers.

Harry was a loving husband, happily married for 44 years, a devoted father to his two daughters, a loyal co-worker and a caring friend. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandson. Below his tough exterior was a kind, gentle man who was first to offer help to anyone who needed it and he touched those he encountered in his own special way.

He is survived by his wife, Andrea; his daughter, Melissa Carabetta and her husband, Dave, and grandson, Andrew; his son-in-law, Craig Coderre; two aunts: Winifred Miller and Esther Carter; sister-in-law, Amelia Nilsen and her husband, Tore; and niece, Monica Nilsen Jenssen and her husband, Orjan, and their son, Tobias. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert; daughter, Jennifer York Coderre, and grandchildren: Sophia and James Carabetta.

Visitation will take place at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home in Middletown on Friday, October 4th, from 2 to 4 and 5 to 9 p.m. Pastor Peter Rustico will conduct a funeral service at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. on Friday evening. Church services and burial, with full Military Honors, will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can also be made to the Middletown Police Benevolent Association, Operation Homefront, and the USO.
