Grace O’Malley Sullivan died peacefully on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at The Valley

View Center in Goshen, NY. She was 82 ½ .

Born Grace Celestine O’Malley on January 14th, 1928 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., she was the youngest child of the late Dr. Andrew W. and Anna (Boland) O’Malley.

Grace graduated in 1948 from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She moved to New York City in 1949 where she worked as a staff nurse in the OB/GYN department of The New York Hospital. She married in 1951 and had three children.

During her professional career, she worked in the Oral Surgery Department of Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, was Clinical Director at Planned Parenthood, and Director of the Women’s Health and Family Planning Clinic at New York Hospital until her retirement in the early 1990’s. Over the years she earned a B.S. in Nursing from Hunter College, a Masters Degree in Public Health and became a Nurse Practioner.

A loving and compassionate person, she dedicated her life to caring for young families and educating people on a wide range of women’s health issues. She always had a kind and generous spirit and loved interacting with people. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by many family and friends.

Grace was predeceased by her parents; two sisters, Mary Catherine (O’Malley) Doyle and Elizabeth Anne O’Malley; two brothers, Andrew W. O’Malley and J. Christopher O’Malley; and her husband, Dr. W. James Sullivan.

She is survived by her three children; son, James Christopher Sullivan and wife, Deborah of Circleville; and two daughters, Elizabeth Anne Sullivan and husband, John Heads of Middletown, and Barbara Drum Sullivan of New York City; four grandchildren, Jedidiah P. and Lucain T. Sullivan-Egan of New York City, and Taylor R. and Tyler J. Sullivan of Circleville; several cousins ; eight nieces and nephews; many grand nieces and nephews; several great-grand nieces and nephews; and several great-great-grand nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their profound gratitude to Grace’s long time home care attendants and to the staff at The Valley View Center.

Donations in her memory may be made to The Arthritis Foundation or to Planned Parenthood.
