Obituary for Gloria Mullarkey
Gloria Mullarkey, a longtime resident of the area, died peacefully with her son at her side at Fishkill Rehab on Tuesday, May 3, 2022. She 83.
The daughter of John J. and Rose Bednarski, she was born in Manhattan on September 25, 1938.
Gloria married her Marine sweetheart, John Francis Mullarkey, on September 9, 1967 in Garden City, N.J. and soon after moved upstate to a more country life. They raised their only child, J. Scott and together they delighted in his accomplishments.
Gloria worked at the TH-Record and lost her job there because they were downsizing. She responded to an ad for the job at the Development Office. Her main job was secretary to the Development Director and other main responsibilities were taking care of the golf tournaments, annual appeals and planned giving. She truly enjoyed and loved her family at the shrine. She was proud of the work they did and was honored to be part of that family. It brightened her life being there. She had a special bond with many of their donors who called frequently. She would even check up on them if she had not heard from them. She loved talking to them. She also prided herself in her proofreading skills and using correct English and punctuation.
She lived her life for others. Her unwavering faith in God and her unbridled trust in God’s will took her through the last weeks of her life with no fear, no pain and a calming peacefulness that brought her to the end of her life knowing she was continuing on and that was okay.
During many of her years as a devoted wife and Mom, Gloria cared for her husband John who suffered from a catastrophic illness in the prime of his life. Her love for him was an inspiration and her attention to his needs kept him always cheerful and fun to be around. She was a tireless caretaker and passionate advocate for her husband, always seeking to improve his quality of life.
She especially enjoyed gardening and was a friend to all the birds and critters visiting the yard.

Gloria was always most proud of her son Scott. She was privileged to be “Granny G” to: Alexandra Rose Turpin of Montgomery, NY; Kelsey and Kyle Nicholson of Newton, CT. She cherished Alexandra. She truly loved to listen to Alexandra tell stories about her life and Granny G was so, so happy to hear them. She admired Alexandra for her many accomplishments, the way she lived her life to the fullest and her compassion for everyone and everything that she was part of.
She was so thankful for Sandi, who kept their family together and selflessly made sure everyone was well taken care of and happy.
Gloria is survived by her loving son, John Scott Mullarkey of Middletown, her granddaughter, Alexandra R Turpin and her mom Sandi Tice.
Gloria was predeceased by her parents, John and Rose and her beloved husband John Francis.
