Giacomo Tavella

September 24, 1937-December 3, 2022

Giacomo “Jack” Tavella, beloved husband, father, Grandpa and friend, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly at home on Saturday, December 3, 2022. He was 85.

The son of the late Francesco and Assunta Fioribello Tavella, Jack was born on September 24, 1937 in Barra Franca, Sicily. In Sicily, Jack worked as a tailor apprentice from a very young age. In the 1950s, he came to the United States and settled in Queens, NY, where he would find work and later marry the love of his life, Catherine Zanetti. Catherine and Jack were married in 1961 at St. Leo’s Church in Queens and they started their family there. In 1981, the Tavellas moved their growing family to the Middletown area.

Jack worked as a tailor, but the entire focus of his life was his family. He was a wonderful husband, father and friend who anyone could count on for help. He was funny and had a great smile. Jack retired over 20 years ago and was able to spend a lot of time making memories with his friends and family. He enjoyed playing poker with friends, serving as a driving instructor for his grandchildren, travelling and spending time with his family. He was a proud lifetime member of the Elks Club #1097.

In addition to his loving wife Catherine “Cathy” at home, Jack is survived by his four children and their families, Mary Ellen and her husband Anthony of East Norwich and their children, Anthony Bott and his wife Lauren and Paul Bott; Jacqueline of Otisville and her children Johnathan Wilson and Connor Wilson and his wife Cassandra; Paul Tavella and his wife Teri of Albuquerque and their children, Kaitlyn, Cody and Jack and Lidia of Mt. Hope and her children, Payton, Robert and Giaccomo Decker. He is also survived by his siblings, Giuseppina Strazzanti of Sicily, Francesco Tavella and his wife Annie of France, Lidia and her husband Giulio of Bayside Queens, and Antionetta and her husband Vincent of Baldwin Place, NY, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Cremation will be private. A Memorial visitation and Celebration of Life will be held from 4 to 7 pm on Thursday, December 8, 2022 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940.
