Obituary for Geraldine Ann Gallagher
Geraldine Ann Gallagher

February 2, 1931-November 16, 2013

Mattapoisett, MA

Geraldine Ann Gallagher, a longtime resident of Otisville and recently of Mattapoisett, MA, died following a short illness at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, MA. She was 82.

The daughter of the late Charles and May Ryan Bracken, she was born on February 2, 1931 in Queens, NY. Geraldine married Bartholomew Gallagher on September 21, 1957 in Yonkers and they shared nearly 51 years of marriage together until his death in 2008. They lived and raised their children in Blauvelt, Monroe and Otisville, NY. She was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Church in Otisville.

Geraldine is survived by her three sons, Keith and his wife Jill, Kevin and his wife Kathy and Matthew and his wife Julie and three daughters, Kathleen Coletta and her husband Franklin, Tara Gallagher and Maureen Quinlan and her husband Henry. She is also survived by 15 beloved grandchildren, Meghan, Conor, Moira, Jack, Emma, Halley, Alexandria, Brooke, Kyle, Adam, Drew, Kristi, Tayler, Ryan and Kelly; and one great-grandson, Peter. Gerry also leaves behind brothers Don Bracken and Brian Bracken along with many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Bartholomew and Sean and her brother Cormac Bracken.

Gerry graduated from Sacred Heart of Mary Academy in the Bronx, and then went on to Grace Institute to get her secretarial degree. After school she worked for Kellogg Engineering in the Woolworth Building in Manhattan. After marrying Bart, Gerry concentrated on establishing a warm, loving home where laughter was commonplace and everyone was welcome. Especially at Christmas, she loved Christmas and shared that wonder with her family. She was her children’s number one fan, never missing a game at Minisink Valley. Football and soccer in the fall, wrestling and basketball in the winter, and baseball, softball and volleyball in the spring, you could always count on seeing her in the stands. When the grandchildren came, she became “Gamma”. She could make a “perfect cup of tea”, have the right cookies, read the right books and brag to the right people. She was always there when you needed her with the perfect combination of love and direction. She worked, most notably as the manager of The Put On Shop in the Orange Plaza Mall, and had many other interests. Gamma was intellectually curious, a voracious reader who carried her Nook everywhere she went. She embraced new technology using email, Facebook and Words with Friends to stay in touch with friends and family. And no explanation of Gerry would be complete without mentioning how elegant and graceful Bart and her were on the dance floor. They were a vision.
