Obituary for Georgia Chambers
Georgia Chambers, born in Sparta, Greece on February 20th, 1929, to Ourania and Ioannis Zi, passed away at home, on March 31st, 2018 at the age of 89 years old surrounded by her family.
Georgia immigrated to the United States when she was 25 years old, where she settled in Middletown, NY and married George Chambers who predeceased her on January 10th, 1982. Georgia worked as a seamstress in the Bridal Department of Green’s Department store and Calvert Coat Company. Georgia and her husband were part of the original group that founded the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church. Georgia was influential in the development of the Greek Ladies Philoptochos, the annual Greek Festivals and other fundraisers. She was a pivotal member in the Greek community and found great joy in attending church.
Her friends and her family will remember her for her hospitality, laughter, warmth, beauty, and intelligence. Her hobbies included sewing, cooking, playing cards and spending time with family and friends. She was well-known for her delicious homemade Greek food and pastries. She took pride in passing down Greek traditions and enjoyed preparing and sharing meals with her loved ones.
Georgia is survived by: her daughters- Ellen Proestopoulos and her husband Vangelli, Nia Walraven and her husband Wally, Sandy Heater and her husband Steve; nine grandchildren- Maria, Georgia and Demetra Proestopoulos, Michael, Andrianna, Kristina and Tommy Walraven, Steven and Kelli Heater; and six great grandchildren. She was also predeceased by her son, Spero.
Special thanks to Valrie Beveridge for giving our mother the respect, dignity, love and care that helped her through the past few years. Thank you to Lori, Toula, Anna and Stefania for your friendship and support. Thank you to everyone at Hospice, especially Christine and Amber.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 3rd from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home at 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY, 10940. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 4th at 10am, at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church at 2250 Goshen Tpke, Middletown, NY 10941. Burial services will immediately follow at the Wallkill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church.
