Obituary for Genevieve Cohen
GENEVIEVE K. COHEN
November 19, 1929 – April 7, 2018
Genevieve K. Cohen of Middletown, NY, beloved wife for 63 years of Marvin H. Cohen, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Orange Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
She was a remarkable woman who, after raising four children, was a teaching assistant at Truman Moon Elementary and then earned her real estate license. She renovated several historic homes in Middletown. She was most proud of renovating two mansions designed by local architect Frank Lindsey: 64 Grand Avenue and 140 Highland Avenue. She transformed the former Stern Mansion, later the Earle Nursing Home, into nine apartments that she named Highland Manor. Genevieve and Marvin have resided in one of the apartments since 1995 and she got great satisfaction providing many people with the opportunity for gracious living in two of Middletown’s finest homes.
Genevieve enjoyed traveling with her family throughout the U.S. Canada as well as overseas. Her most memorable trips were their 5-week honeymoon car trip in 1955 across the U.S. and Canada (before the interstate highways) and her first overseas trip to Europe in 1965. It was there that she fell in love with Switzerland and returned there several times with her children. Her travels took her to the Soviet Union, Poland, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Peru. Last year, Marvin, Steven and she cruised through the Panama Canal.
The youngest of seven, Genevieve was born in Brooklyn and moved to South Main Street, Florida, NY in 1935. She graduated from S.S. Seward Institute as valedictorian (1947) and earned her degree from Orange County Community College (1955) while working at the National Bank of Middletown in the Trust Department. She was past president of the Middletown Jayncees and a long-time member of the Board of the Middletown & Wallkill Historical Society.
Genevieve is predeceased by her parents, Nicholas and Sophia Kurpiel, by her sisters, Bernice Bass, Helen Grace, Mary Petresin, Helen Michalek and brothers, Edward and Chester Kurpiel. She is survived by her husband, Marvin of Middletown, NY; son, Steven Cohen (Cindy) of Ardentown, DE; daughters, Sandra Weaver (Jon) of Rockport, MA; Sherri Davis of Essex, MA and Susan Cohen of Dunedin, FL along with 8 grandchildren: Nicholas Cohen (Renée) of Chadds Ford, PA; Benjamin Cohen of Wilmington, DE; Emma Davis of Tokyo, Japan; Audrey and Clara Davis of Essex, MA; Grant and Hope Weaver of Rockport, MA; Joseph Chabowski (Crystal) of Saugerties, NY; plus two great grandchildren, Jacques and Julienne Cohen of Chadds Ford, PA.
Very special thanks to Mom’s dear friends at Highland Manor: Eileen Crispi for her devoted support; Ted Powell for all his help at the house and Frank Gesualdo who lovingly maintained and improved her houses for the past 32 years.
A Memorial Service will be held at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, 130 Highland Avenue, on Friday, April 27th, from 9:30 – 11:00 am. A private Celebration of Life will be held at her home later in the Spring. Donations in her name can be made to Planned Parenthood of Mid-Hudson Valley, 178 Church Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
