Obituary for Fredrick H. Slanovec
Fredrick H. Slanovec
5/21/52-2/2/21
Middletown, NY

Our family is saddened to announce the passing of our hero, our rock and our beloved husband, father, grandparent, friend, and brother.
On Tuesday, February 2, 2021, Fredrick H. Slanovec succumbed after a valiant and brutal battle to a devastating bout of Covid at Garnet Health Center. With restrictions imposed during his illness, his family was left to visit remotely. The world has lost an amazing, good man. Fred was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend and brother. The love, happiness and joy of his life were his two sons and his grandchildren. They meant the world to him. This gentle man was known for his devotion to his family, his strength, his ability to tackle any job he tried, his fierce loyalty to his friends, his sense of humor, laugh and smile, his generosity and his love for his brothers of the New York State Police and law enforcement. He was viewed by his kids as the best Dad ever, the best guitar player, the best cook, weightlifter and arm wrestler. Fred was extremely involved in his boys’ sporting activities and was so very proud of them. He was an avid reader who loved History. He loved boating, skiing and golfing. He enjoyed sharing his musical abilities and fabulous meals with his family and all his friends.
His 30.5 years with the N.Y. State Police as a Trooper, Sergeant and Investigator gave him the opportunity to share his knowledge of the law and willingness to keep our community safe and forge lifetime friendships. We are grateful for his service and appreciate his many colleagues in law enforcement who share our tremendous loss.
Fred is survived by the love of his life, Margaret “Maggie” Brussell Slanovec, whom he married on August 8, 1981, in Seaford, NY, and his son, Fredrick J. Slanovec and wife Jacqueline along with his grandchildren, Alexandria, Isabella, Ava and Ryan.
He is further survived by his two cousins who he often referred to as his “brothers”; Gerard Lubitz (Carol), and Ed Lubitz (Kyle); six brothers-in-law, five sisters-in-law, three godchildren, and numerous loving nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.
Fred was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Margie Slanovec, his beloved son Craig Matthew who passed in 2001, his Aunt Jo and Uncle Jerry and his brother Robert Timothy.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the NYS Police Signal 30 Benefit Fund or the City of Middletown Police Benevolent Association.
The Slanovec family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and heath care technicians who tirelessly, unselfishly and lovingly took care of him. They would also like to thank all of the hundreds of people who prayed for him and continue to do so, especially the Prayer Warriors. They would also like to extend a special heart felt thank you to the New York State Police, City of Middletown Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, and the Towns of Goshen, Wallkill and Montgomery Police Departments for the most respectful, moving tribute than any police officer could ever receive. This will always remain imprinted on our hearts and we are eternally grateful.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 7, 2021, from 1-5 pm at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Ave., Middletown NY. Due to NYS Restrictions, masks are required and social distancing is encouraged. Arrangements are made under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. www.applebee-mcphillips.com.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 8th, at 12 noon at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 90 Euclid Ave., Middletown, NY., with Rev. Fr. Nicholas Blackwell officiating. This mass will be live streamed on Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s Facebook page. The Slanovec family would also like everyone to know that we honor and respect everyone’s decision regarding attendance due to such unusual circumstances. Burial at Ridgebury Cemetery will be private and at the convenience of the family.

**Visitation will be livestreamed from 1 pm to 2 pm on Sunday, February 7, 2021
