Reverend Philip Marani O.Carm., a member of the Order of Carmelites of the North American Province of St. Elias, died on Monday, May 9, 2022. He was 82 years old.
Frank Marani was born in New York City on September 10, 1939. He was predeceased by his parents Tullio and Angelina (Simonutti) Marani. He is survived by two brothers, Louis (Rosyln deceased) and Remo (Maureen), nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.
As Brother Philip, he was simply professed on September 15, 1959 at Mount Carmel in Williamstown, Massachusetts and professed solemn vows in the Carmelite Order in Middletown, New York on September 16, 1962. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 5, 1965 in Washington, DC.
Father Philip attended St. Albert’s Junior Seminary in Middletown, NY from 1954 to 1958. He entered the Novitiate at Mount Carmel in Williamstown, NY in 1958 and was simply professed in 1959. He attended St. Bonaventure College in Olean, NY from 1960 to 1962, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree. From 1962 to 1966 Father Philip lived at Whitefriars Hall in Washington, DC and studied theology. He did further studies in Religious Education at Catholic University of America during the summers. He taught at Mt. Carmel High School in Auburn, NY from 1966-1968 and served as a Vocation Director for the Province from 1968 to 1971.
Father Philip served as Associate Pastor at Transfiguration Parish in Tarrytown, NY from 1971 to 1973 before returning to St. Albert’s Junior Seminary where he was the Prior and teacher. From 1979 to 1988 Father Philip served as Chaplain at the Middletown Psychiatric Center. In 1988 he moved to Our Lady of the Scapular-St. Stephen’s Parish in Manhattan, where he served as Parochial Vicar for two years, Procurator for nine years and Hospital Chaplain at Bellevue from 1990 to 2007.
In 2007 Father Philip returned to Transfiguration Parish in Tarrytown, NY and served as Parochial Vicar from 2009 to 2013. After his retirement in 2013, Father Philip moved to St. Albert’s Priory in Middletown, NY before being moved in 2018 to Valley View Health and Rehabilitation Center in Goshen, NY where he lived until his death.
A hard-working Carmelite, Father Philip also served in several capacities in the St. Elias Province, including as Vocation Director, a member of the Apostolate Commission for the Chapter, and the Retirement, Financial, and Formation Commissions. He was a professed Carmelite for 63 years and a priest for 57 years. He will be greatly missed.
