Frank Forthoffer, an active lifetime area resident, passed away on October 12, 2017 at Orange Regional Medical Center. He was 88.
The son of the late Ernest R. and Emily Crawford Forthoffer, he was born on November 20, 1928 in Middletown, NY. Frank graduated from Middletown High School in 1946 and served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. He graduated from Cornell University in 1952 where he met his future wife and love of his life. He married Mary V. Rowley on September 6, 1952 in Washington, D.C. and was blessed with over 58 years of love and companionship until her death in 2011.
Frank owned and operated VanSickle’s Shoe Store in downtown Middletown for much of his life and was very active in the community. He was a 57 year member of Middletown Fire Department’s Excelsior Hook and Ladder Company and served on the boards of both Braeside Camp and Horton Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Middletown Historical Society and Middletown Kiwanis Club.
Frank was a quiet, adventure loving man who enjoyed travel and model railroading. He and Mary traveled extensively, seeing much of the world and visiting 49 of the 50 states. Frank owned his own plane and was a licensed private pilot. Although he took early retirement at the age of 62, he was never one to rest on his laurels, volunteering his time at the United Presbyterian Church and Orange Regional Medical Center.
He is survived by three children, his son, Gary and his wife Dawn, of Bloomingburg and daughters, Carol Maltais of Middletown and Gail Forthoffer of Methuen, MA. Also survived by granddaughters, Allison Seirmarco and her husband Salvatore of West Milford, NJ and Emily Forthoffer of Bloomingburg as well as his dog Tobi.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm on Monday, October 16, 2017 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, October 17 at the funeral home, Rev. Salvatore Seirmarco will officiate. Burial will follow in the family plot in Wallkill Cemetery.
