Middletown, NY

Franco Rossi, owner and operator of Brookside Manor Catering and longtime resident of the area, passed away quietly and peacefully on Holy Thursday, April 21, 2011 with his family by his side. He was 72.

He was born on June 1, 1938 in Fraine, Chieti, Italy, the son of the late Vittorio and Angela Maria Felice Rossi. He came to the United States on January 20, 1959 and lived with his brother, Pino on Prince Street in Middletown, NY. He went back to Italy and married Vincenza Flavia DiIorio on June 20, 1963. He became a United States citizen on August 26, 1964.

Franco and Flavia lived in Paterson, NJ where he worked at Silk and Rayon Printers and Dyers Association of America, Inc. from 1964-1973. Franco and Flavia had sons Franco Jr., (born on June 22, 1968) and Steven Daniel (born on April 10, 1972). Franco moved his family to Middletown, NY in 1973 and worked as a painter and wallpaper contractor until 1979. In 1979, he built and opened Brookside Manor Catering where he worked for over 31 years.

Franco was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Middletown. He was a charter member and past treasurer of the Raffaello Lodge #2661, Order of the Sons of Italy in America in Middletown since 1992. He was a member of Circolo Cattalico Italiano in Newburgh, NY. He loved soccer and enjoyed watching Italian soccer on Sunday morning followed by Sunday dinner, spending quality time with his family around him. He loved playing bocce and played in a bocce league in Newburgh, NY. He loved playing Italian card games. He was a very hard worker and a perfectionist, spending his entire life providing for his family.

He was very loving and caring person who helped so many people in so many ways; he will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife of over 47 years, Flavia of Middletown; his sons, Franco Jr. and his girlfriend, Monica and Steven Daniel and his girlfriend, Xiomara; two sisters; Elisa Natale and her husband, Ermindo of Fairfield, NJ and Linda DiIrio and her husband, Silvio of Middletown; sister-in-law, Novilia Rossi of Middletown, sister-in-law, Maria Rossi of Fraine, Italy; 17 nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his brothers, Pino and Vittorio Rossi and sister, Mara Ciccione and brother-in-law, Antonio Ciccione. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday, April 23 and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 25th at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Ave., Middletown, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 25 at St. Joseph's Church, 149 Cottage St., Middletown, NY. Entombment will take place in the Queen of Peace Mausoleum at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
