Obituary for Francis E. DeWitt
Francis DeWitt
7/14/30-2/26/21
Mt. Hope, NY
Francis Edward DeWitt, Sr., age 90, went home to be with his Lord on February 26, 2021. He was born in Middletown, New York on July 14, 1930 and lived most of his life in the Mount Hope, New York area. He is survived by the love of his life, beloved wife of 70 years, Kitty DeWitt. He is also survived by 7 of his 8 children, Nancy, Gloria, Karen, Edward, Frank, Chris, and Darryl. Son, Kevin, passed away before him in 1985. Also surviving are his children’s spouses, Ben, Ed, Crista, Dawn and Sue, as well as his 18 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
What can be said about a man who loved God, his family and community all of his life? A good man, a generous man, and a man whom God surely welcomed home with open arms saying “well done my good and faithful servant.”
Frank was retired from Ford Motor Company, where he received many awards for his ideas to improve production. He also was skilled in carpentry and mechanics and over the years could fix and remodel just about anything. He was an avid gardener who often shared his delicious garlic and tomatoes with family and friends. He also had a passion for cooking. We are sure there are many in the community who remember the DeWitt’s summer barbeques where he cooked on his giant, homemade barbeque grill. Frank was also an avid hunter and nature lover.
Frank was a 50-year member of Holy Cross Church, in Slate Hill, New York where he worked as a sexton for many of those years. There will be a viewing and mass of Christian burial on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Holy Cross Church for those who wish to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Research Hospital at 1-800-873-6983. Arrangements are made under the direction of Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc. www.applebee-mcphillips.com.
