Evelyn D. Herlihy-Blackman, originally from The Bronx, died surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Orange Regional Medical Center. She was 94.
She was born on October 27, 1923, the daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth Laney Brulfer. Evelyn was the youngest of ten siblings: Carolyn, William Francis, Charles, Mildred, Ethel, Helen Veronica, Elizabeth, Gertrude, and Eleanor, the oldest. She was pre-deceased by her first husband, Dr. Vincent Patrick Herlihy in 1965. Moving to Rockland County, she met her second husband, Paul Blackman, who pre-deceased her in 2011, while residing in Orange County.
She attended Queens College at night in the early sixties for her Baccalaureate in Nursing, in which field she worked for over 30 years, including serving as a line and supervising Registered Nurse from 1962 until her retirement in 1986 from Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx. Evelyn was an independent, disciplined woman, who liked gardening, porcelain dolls and doll houses, and doted on a string of Pomeranians, Scotties, and West Hyland Terriers.
She cherished her grandchildren and liked spending time with them whenever possible.
Evelyn is survived by her son, Vincent W. Herlihy and his wife, Sherry; and her grandchildren, Vincent B., Christopher, and Elizabeth and great grandchildren, Devon, Jack and Audrey; and she loved Tara as a granddaughter and her children, Annalise, James and Liam as great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Patricia Herlihy-Cronin in 2013.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 17, 2017 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 149 Cottage Street, Middletown, NY 10940. Entombment will follow in Queen of Peace Mausoleum in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Middletown, NY.
